International Patient Services / Referrals for foreign visitors
Emergency admission to the Faroese Hospital System In the event of a medical emergency, please call the Emergency Services telephone number: 112, or go directly to the Emergency Department at the hospital. All foreign visitors are entitled to emergency treatment in case of accident, sudden onset or worsening illness, as well as childbirth, on an equal footing with persons residing permanently in the Faroes. Non-emergency admission to the Faroese Hospital System Non-emergency referrals to the Hospital System during normal working hours are routinely made by the General Practitioners located throughout the country. Confer www.kml.fo for information about the closest General Practitioner near you. After consulting with a General Practitioner, if needed, you will be referred to the appropriate specialist physician on staff at the hospital. The specialist will then review your case and schedule an appointment. For acute, non-emergency referrals after normal working hours (weekdays 16:00 – 8:00 and all day on weekends and public holidays), please call ”1870”, the direct on-call telephone number of the General Practitioners Service at the National Hospital, to consult with the on-call physician.
Coverage If you are not covered by a reciprocal health plan agreement (residents in the other Nordic countries, Greenland and the United Kingdom), you will be charged as a private, non-resident patient. Unless other arrangements are made, for example, you have healthcare coverage provided by a current insurance policy or by your employer, you will be personally liable for the hospital charges incurred for your treatment. Charges will be based on the then current Danish Diagnosis-related Group (DRG) system. If you have any questions concerning the medical services provided by the National Health System, you are welcome to contact International Patient Services (Uttanlandstænastan) weekdays 8:00 – 16:00 by email: uttanlandst@ls.fo; by telephone: +298 30 45 00 – Ext. 1150, or by facsimile: +298 30 46 01. |
